📊 Your Data Plan Estimate
⚠️ Actual duration may vary based on video quality, background app updates, and network speed. This is an estimate based on your average daily usage.
How to Use the Data Bundle Duration Estimator
This tool helps you plan your data purchases more intelligently. Instead of guessing whether a 2 GB plan will last you a week or a month, you get a clear, personalised estimate. Here's how:
- Pick your network. Select MTN, Glo, Airtel, or 9mobile. While the calculation is network-agnostic (data is data), it helps you mentally tie the result to the provider you actually use.
- Choose your data plan size. We've pre-loaded the most common data bundle sizes sold in Nigeria—from 500 MB micro plans up to 20 GB monthly plans. If your exact plan isn't listed, choose "Custom Size" and enter the MB value manually.
- Enter your estimated daily usage. This is the most important field. Be honest. If you watch 30 minutes of YouTube, scroll Instagram for an hour, and use WhatsApp all day, your daily usage might be 300–500 MB. A lighter user who only checks email and sends WhatsApp texts might use just 50–80 MB per day. See our usage guide below for help.
- Click "Calculate Duration." The tool instantly divides your total data by your daily usage and displays the estimated number of days your bundle will last, plus the calendar expiry date if you activated it today.
Why This Matters for Nigerian Data Users
Data is expensive in Nigeria, and buying the wrong plan can mean running out of data mid-month or wasting money on a plan that expires before you can finish it. Here's why this estimator is useful:
- Avoid "data finish" panic. If you know your 5 GB plan typically lasts 18 days, you'll know exactly when to top up—no sudden disconnections during important video calls or online exams.
- Compare plan value across networks. A 2 GB plan on MTN might cost ₦1,000 while Glo offers 3 GB for the same price. Use this tool to see how much longer the Glo plan would last you—real value, not just GB numbers.
- Budget accurately. If you spend ₦5,000 per month on data, this tool helps you see whether a monthly plan or weekly top-ups give you more days of connectivity for the same money.
- Understand your own habits. Many people underestimate how much data streaming and social media consume. After using this tool a few times, you'll develop a much sharper sense of your actual daily usage.
How We Calculate Duration
The calculation is straightforward but powerful:
- Plan size (in MB) ÷ Daily usage (in MB) = Estimated number of days.
- The expiry date is calculated by adding the estimated days to today's date.
We use megabytes (MB) for consistency since most Nigerian data plans are sold in MB or GB. If you select a plan in GB, we automatically convert: 1 GB = 1,024 MB.
Real-world factors that can change your actual duration:
- Video resolution: Streaming on 1080p can use 1.5–3 GB per hour, while 480p uses about 500 MB per hour. YouTube's "Data Saver" mode reduces usage significantly.
- Background app refresh: Apps updating in the background, automatic cloud backups, and system updates eat data silently.
- Network speed: Faster 4G/5G connections can load higher-quality content automatically, consuming more data in the same browsing session.
We recommend using a slightly conservative daily usage estimate (e.g., round up by 10–15%) to ensure your plan doesn't run out earlier than expected.

Frequently Asked Questions
This calculator estimates how long a single data bundle will last from activation to exhaustion. If your network offers data rollover (e.g., MTN's "Data Rollover" on some plans), any unused data from a previous bundle would extend your duration. To factor that in, simply add the rolled-over MB to your plan size before entering it.
Several reasons: (1) You may be underestimating your daily usage—videos and auto-playing ads consume data quickly. (2) Some apps use data in the background even when you're not actively using them. (3) Network operators measure data slightly differently. We recommend entering a daily usage figure 10–15% higher than your best guess to build in a safety margin.
Yes, but you'll need to adjust your daily usage figure to reflect only the hours you're allowed to use the data. For example, if you have a night-only plan and you estimate you'd use 200 MB during those hours, enter 200 MB as your daily usage. The calculator will still give you a days estimate, but keep in mind that night plans often have shorter validity periods regardless of data volume.
Yes, absolutely free. No sign-ups, no personal data collected, and no hidden charges. It runs entirely in your browser.
Your smartphone tracks this automatically. On Android, go to Settings → Network & Internet → Data Usage to see a daily breakdown. On iPhone, go to Settings → Cellular and scroll down to see app-by-app usage (you'll need to reset the statistics manually each month and track daily averages). You can also use your network provider's app, which often shows daily data consumption.
